Less than an hour after the 5:00 p.m. start of the Kansas City tiebreaker, the WesCo 3A playoff picture became crystal clear. Although the Saturday night tiebreaker didn’t have the same excitement as the usual Friday night games, with three teams fighting for two spots in the playoffs, the stakes were still high. In the end, the Hawks left Shoreline Stadium with a taste of disappointment.

In game one, the Hawks played Everett in a rematch of the memorable homecoming game a week ago. The Hawks had a golden opportunity to score the first points of the overtime-style game, getting down near the Everett goal line with a few Devante Downs runs. However, a sack pushed the Hawks back to the 16-yard line, which was followed up by a failed fourth down conversion. Everett got the ball back but turned the ball over on downs.

Everett took possession to start the second offensive series and made the most of it. Faced with 4th-and-2, the Seagulls scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. The ball went back to the Hawks and they needed to score to force another overtime. Many costly penalties set the Hawks back and eventually set up an undesirable 4th-and-7 situation. An incomplete pass ended the game, giving Everett the victory.

At that point, Terrace students and parents were nervously awaiting game two of the Kansas City tiebreaker, pitting Everett and Shorecrest. The Hawks needed Everett to beat Shorecrest to have a shot at the WesCo No. 4 seed. Shorecrest scored a touchdown and decided to go for a 2-point conversion. The conversion was successful, putting pressure on Everett to score and Terrace fans on the edge of their seats. Everett had their backs against the wall with a fourth down situation. On the last play of the game, the Seagulls went deep for the end zone but the ball glanced off the tips of the receiver’s hands, giving Shorecrest the WesCo No. 3 seed and Everett the No. 4 seed.

Mountlake Terrace finished on the outside of the playoff picture.

For the Hawks, a great season full of high hopes fell short. A second trip in as many years to the playoffs was denied. Although the Hawks won’t be playing in the postseason, they can rest on the fact that they competed each and every game. With a 6-3 record, the Hawks have completed back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 1980s and just the second time in the school’s 50 year history.

In the final regular season conference game, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks blew out the Lynnwood Royals 43-13 on Thursday night at Edmonds Stadium.

Despite Lynnwood’s futility over the last few years, the Hawks did not overlook their opponent. Less than a week removed from a homecoming win over Everett, a win over Lynnwood would keep the Hawks’ playoff hopes alive. In addition, the Hawks needed Glacier Peak to defeat Everett.

However, the Hawks started slow out of the gate. Lynnwood scored the first points of the game with a fumble recovery returned 21 yards for a touchdown and took the 7-0 early lead.

Shortly after the second quarter began, the Hawks scored on a Hunter Rook 11-yard touchdown run and never looked back from that point. The Hawks scored 36 unanswered points until Lynnwood stopped the bleeding with a short touchdown run.

The Hawks’ offense was powered by the running game led by Devante Downs and Griffin Rash. Downs had 24 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Rash had nine carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior Ryan Benham added a 9-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.

By the third quarter, it seemed as if fans were more interested in the score of the Glacier Peak-Everett game, rather the game right in front of them. When fans found out that Glacier Peak was blowing out Everett, fans cheered upon hearing the positive news.

The Hawks’ season does not end here though. The Hawks are tied with Shorecrest and Everett in the WesCo 3A standings, and only two of three teams will move on to the district playoffs. Glacier Peak and Meadowdale have already sealed the top two spots.

Mountlake Terrace, Shorecrest and Everett will be playing in a three-team Kansas City tiebreaker on Saturday night at Shoreline Stadium, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The teams will play an overtime-style format and start on the 25-yard line. For admission, adults, students without ASB cards, seniors and children will pay $2. High school students with ASB cards enter for free.

In game one, the Hawks play Everett in a rematch of the homecoming game a week ago. If the Hawks win, they play Shorecrest in game two for the WesCo 3A third seed in the playoffs. However, if the Hawks lose to Everett, they would need the Seagulls to beat Shorecrest, in order to play the Scots for a shot at the 4th seed. After that, the fourth seed crosses over and plays the Northwest Conference’s second seed next Tuesday.

But for now, all three teams have to prepare first for Saturday night before thinking ahead.

Mitch Haldane for the run in the Homecoming game at Edmonds Stadium on Oct.22

There’s no bigger game than the homecoming game. For the Mountlake Terrace football team, it was much more than that. A win would put them one step closer to the playoffs; a loss would stop their pursuit of the playoffs short and send them home. In any case, the Hawks came out ready to play and showed their mettle.

The Terrace defense came up big in a thrilling fourth quarter to hold off the Everett Seagulls for a nail-biting 14-13 victory in a WesCo 3A showdown on Oct. 22 at Edmonds Stadium.

With Everett scoring on a 7-yard touchdown pass, the Seagulls had a chance to even the game and possibly send the game into overtime. However, a normally routine duty for the Everett kicker quickly became a nightmare. The extra point attempt was low and bounced off of a Terrace lineman, an scene reminiscent to a blocked field goal during last year’s homecoming victory over Kamiak.

“I was just praying that someone would block it or they would miss it. And it happened. I didn’t even celebrate, I was so shocked,” senior David Turner said of the missed kick.

Everett’s onside kick attempt with 28 seconds remaining failed, and the Hawks ran out the clock to seal the victory. But it took all 48 minutes to pull out the victory.

Mountlake Terrace coach Tony Umayam was pleased with the way his team reacted to the early adversity. “I’m proud of the fact that they played all 48 minutes. We gave them an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter and it would be easy to hang your head on that. But our guys are tough and then they fight. Our defense really stepped it up when they needed to.”

The defense was key to the victory, especially during tough situations in the fourth quarter. Everett had second-and-goal from the 11, when senior defensive back Martinze Johnson leaped up high for an interception in the back of the end zone to stop the drive. Later in the fourth quarter, with pressure applied by defensive lineman Jope Motokana, senior defensive back Zack Karels picked off a pass in the back of the end zone. Karels had two interceptions, his first coming in the third quarter.

“We just had to execute and make sure we got the job done and that’s what the guys came to do. That’s what we practice for,” Johnson, who also had 12 tackles, said of the defense’s effort.

Freshman running back Devante Downs led the Hawks’ offensive attack with 33 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Griffin Rash added nine carries for 55 yards. Rash also had nine tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

On Terrace’s third offensive possession of the game, Downs capped a 17 play, 81 yard drive with a 2-yard plunge for the end zone. Despite the Hawks outgaining the Seagulls in total yardage, 153 to 60, the score was tied at 7-7.

With 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Downs took the pitch from quarterback Hunter Rook and rushed down the right sideline squeezing in for a 10-yard touchdown, putting the Hawks up 14-7.

Aside from the stellar performance from the defense, the special teams unit made life more difficult for Everett, as they did not have favorable field position. Junior Jalen Pahinui averaged 40.2 yards per punt and senior Julian Snow averaged 55.3 yards per kickoff. More importantly, both players have improved immensely since the beginning of the season.

The Hawks’ win gives an interesting twist to the WesCo 3A playoff race. Mountlake Terrace must defeat Lynnwood on Thursday and needs Everett to lose to conference leader Glacier Peak in order to advance to the playoffs for the second straight year. The Hawks shut out Lynnwood 28-0 last year.

“Hopefully, we can get a playoff run coming out of this. We have Lynnwood next week, so hopefully we can keep the momentum going and sweep them off the field,” linebacker Mitch Haldane, who led the team with 14 tackles, said of the impact of defeating Everett.

The Hawks are feeling confident about their chances to make the playoffs again. With every game, the Hawks continue to improve and grow together as a team. As long as the team comes out with the same energy they had during homecoming and senior night, the chants of “Terrace Power” will be heard all around WesCo again.

“If we keep it up, I think we can beat any team in this league. I really believe we have a lot of talent out there and a lot of hard workers. I think we got it,” Rash said.

Football

The football team is in a position to head to the postseason for the second straight season. A win over Lynnwood, as well as an Everett loss this week, should be enough.

The team has competed well throughout the season on its way to a 5-3 record with one game remaining. As of late, the team has improved coming close in a loss to Glacier Peak, the No. 9 team in the state, a shutout win over Shorewood and a homecoming victory over Everett.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Hunter Rook and running back Devante Downs have led the offense. The offensive line, one of the team’s strengths, has provided time and space for the offense to work with.On defense, linebacker Mitch Haldane has been one of the league leaders in tackles. Overall, the aggressive defense has been able to put pressure on opposing teams all year long.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team (3-11 overall, 3-9 WesCo 3A) is still in contention for a trip to the 3A district playoffs. They currently are hanging on to the sixth and final spot, trying to stave off Lynnwood and Oak Harbor, who they have defeated twice this season.

The team is led by sophomore forward Erin Russell, who has amassed a total of seven goals. Aside from Russell, the offensive attack has been limited at times. On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore goalkeeper Takara Mitsui has three shutouts, all resulting in Terrace victories.

Mountlake Terrace faces off against Meadowdale on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium. A win over Meadowdale or a Lynnwood loss would extend the team’s season into the district playoffs.

Volleyball

Heading into the final week of the season, the volleyball team is not in a position they would like to be in. Although the team has played with energy, excitement and enthusiasm at times this year, they currently sit at the bottom of the standings. The team started the season on the right foot, but once league play began, wins were harder to come by. In early October, the team defeated Shorecrest for its first Wesco 3A win of the season. From that point on, the team has been winless.

Despite the struggles, seniors Cristine Lotz and Liana Samuelson led the team all year. Even though the team won’t be playing in the postseason, next year’s team looks to have a strong core. Juniors Leah Lechtenberg and Soleil Boileau were active this year and should have a bigger role next year.

Cross Country

The cross country team has had an impressive season thus far. At the WesCo 3A Championships on Oct. 23, the men finished seventh out of eight WesCo teams, while the women finished fourth out of the eight teams. A few breakout performers have emerged as well.

On the men’s side, freshman Jack Pearce has been one of the top runners all season long in WesCo. Pearce finished in 11th place with a time of 17:13 in the WesCo 3A championships in Lakewood. At the Edmonds School District Championships, Pearce finished in fifth place.

On the women’s side, junior Nina Penner has led the way. At the WesCo Championships, she took 17th place with a time of 20:53, and at the Edmonds School District Championships, Penner finished in second place with a time of 18:45.

Cross country has a meet this Saturday at the Northwest District Championships at South Whidbey H.S. The top three teams and top 15 individuals runners will advance to the WIAA 3A State Championships.

Women’s Swimming

The women’s swimming team has had a rocky season, winning only one meet overall. However, individual performances by junior Hunter Goncalves and sophomore Riley Morgan have been the bright spots on the squad.

Goncalves, a captain, won her race in the 500 meter freestyle on Oct. 21 against Kamiak with a time of 5:26.69. In the same meet, Morgan won her race in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 26.58.

The swim team’s season is nearly over as it is heading into the last few weeks. On Friday, Oct. 29, the JV championship meet takes place at Shoreline Pool, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

For top qualifiers, the district meet begins Nov. 5 in Anacortes and the state meet takes place Nov. 11 in Federal Way.

Men’s Tennis

Before the season even began, the men’s tennis team knew that winning matches would be no easy feat. The young and inexperienced team with no seniors on the roster struggled to play consistently throughout the season. Finally, the team began to gain some positive momentum toward the end of the season.

Juniors John Kim and Stuart Milner took seventh place in the WesCo 3A playoffs last Wednesday at Jackson H.S. However, the doubles pair just missed out on a berth to the district tournament, as only the top six pairs advance. Their accomplishment was one of a few bright spots in the team’s season.

Although the team as a whole did not win a match the entire season, there is reason for optimism. A multitude of underclassmen who gained valuable experience this year competing against older opponents will be much improved heading into next year, as long as they all return.

The Mountlake Terrace Hawks (4-3, 2-3 Wesco 3A) shut out the Shorewood Thunderbirds (2-5, 1-5 Wesco 3A) Friday night at Shoreline Stadium.

The Hawks were led by running back Devante Downs’ four rushing touchdowns, a season high for the impressive freshman. Downs, who has accumulated 10 rushing touchdowns this season, used excellent blocking by the offensive line to find open running room throughout the night. He finished with 98 yards rushing and 23 yards receiving.

Terrace was coming off of a narrow 37-35 loss against Glacier Peak last week and looked to spoil Shorewood’s homecoming game. This week, the Hawks came out ready to go in their final tune up before next week’s critical 3A matchup against Everett.

Downs had two early touchdowns to set the tone of the game. In the second quarter, quarterback Hunter Rook scrambled for a 32-yard run, setting up an 11-yard touchdown pass to Zack Karels in the back of the endzone. Rook was 10/17 and passed for 134 yards. Karels had a productive night with two receptions for 60 yards, and four rushes for 57 yards. At halftime, the Hawks had a comfortable 21-0 lead.

After the halftime break, the Hawks’ potent running attack of Downs, Karels and Griffin Rash continued to drive down the field. And Downs continued to increase his touchdown count with short runs from inside the redzone.

The defense put pressure on Shorewood all night causing havoc at the line of scrimmage. Stafford Williams had nine tackles and two sacks, while Mitch Haldane had eight tackles and five assists. This was the team’s second shutout of the season.

Shorewood could not match the Hawks’ intensity, despite having reasons to be motivated. The Thunderbirds have not had a winning season since 2003 and losing to Mountlake Terrace would extend the streak. In addition, it was the homecoming game and senior night for Shorewood. However, none of that mattered to the Hawks. The Hawks have already spoiled Sedro-Woolley’s homecoming this year and Edmonds-Woodway’s homecoming last year.

Everett (5-1, 4-1 Wesco 3A) will look to turn the tables on the Hawks by spoiling next week’s homecoming game. The Everett Seagulls visit the Hawks next Friday at Edmonds Stadium, 5:00 p.m. If the Hawks are looking to be the first team in school history to make the playoffs in consecutive years, next week’s game will help them get one step closer. The Hawks have yet to come up with a statement victory, already falling short against powerhouses Meadowdale and Glacier Peak. Nonetheless, the Hawks are still in contention for the fourth and final Wesco 3A playoff spot.

The Mountlake Terrace Hawks football team spoiled Sedro-Woolley’s homecoming game with a 22-13 non-conference win Friday night at Greene Memorial Field.

The Hawks (3-2) were led by freshman running back Devante Downs’ 177 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns. From start to finish, the powerful Hawks’ offensive line was able to provide Downs with many open running opportunities.

“Devante is a hard worker and it’s nice that he’s a pretty sharp guy. He’s a quick learner,” Hawks coach Tony Umayam said of Downs. “He has been a pleasant surprise for us.”

Early on, Zack Karels’ 53-yard punt return for a touchdown gave the Hawks much-needed momentum. The first quarter was filled with punts, dropped passes and sloppy play by both teams. From that point on, Downs and the rest of the offense marched down the field at will with little opposition.

With a 2-yard touchdown to begin the second quarter and a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter by Downs, the small contingent of Terrace fans who made the 90 minute drive were on their feet. The Hawks looked to be in control with a 22-0 lead.

Contributors on offense were quarterback Hunter Rook, who threw for 54 yards, and tight end Mitch Haldane with seven catches for 54 yards.

The Hawks shut the Cubs down for much of the first three quarters with constant pressure from Haldane, Julian Snow and Stafford Williams. However, Sedro-Woolley mounted a late game comeback. Cubs running back Clayton Johnson, who had a relatively quiet night, broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run with 1:35 in the third quarter.

Disaster nearly struck in the fourth quarter for the Hawks. Following an 11-yard run by Downs, the Hawks had first-and-goal from the 2-yard line. Two consecutive false starts pushed the Hawks back to the 12. Shortly after, Rook was sacked setting up a fourth-and-23 situation. The Hawks tried to convert on fourth down but Rook fumbled in the face of heavy pressure.

“Those mistakes put us in a situation where it cost ourselves a touchdown and we had a chance to go up by three scores,” Umayam said. “Fortunately we had a little bit of a cushion to work with.”

After recovering the fumble, Sedro-Woolley took possession of the ball. A few plays later, the Cubs’ third-string quarterback Seth Noble hooked up with Aaron Stroosma for a 67-yard touchdown, narrowing the Terrace lead to 22-13 with 4:57 remaining in the game. The Cubs surprisingly decided to go for the 2-point conversion but failed.

Following the game, Coach Umayam told his players that next week’s opponent, Glacier Peak, will be a much different opponent than Sedro-Woolley was.

“Glacier Peak is known for their high-flying offense. We’re going to have to make sure that our secondary is ready to contain their athletes and we need to pressure their quarterback,” Umayam said. “Offensively, we need to be able to sustain drives and we did that a little bit [Friday night].”

The Hawks face No. 9 Glacier Peak (4-1, 4-0 Wesco 3A) next Friday at Edmonds Stadium, 8:00 p.m. Glacier Peak won Friday night against Meadowdale 42-21.

“This game gets us amped up for next week and basically gives us the momentum we need to beat Glacier Peak,” Haldane said.

The Meadowdale Mavericks knocked off the Mountlake Terrace Hawks 16-7 in a hard-fought Wesco 3A battle on Friday night.

In a closely contested game, the Mavericks (3-1, 2-0 Wesco 3A) were able to pull away with kicker Brian Marty’s three field goals of 30, 30 and 34 yards. The Mavs were also aided by their power running game led by Kyle Gage and Michael Dever. Dever had a 4-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, putting the Mavericks up 7-0.

The Hawks (2-2, 1-2 Wesco 3A) were unable to move the ball down the field effectively on the offensive side of the ball, with the exception of their first drive of the second half.

Freshman running back Devante Downs capped off a 46-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, pumping up the Terrace crowd for the first time. Shortly following the score, senior Julian Snow forced a fumble, allowing the Hawks to gain momentum. However, the Hawks could not capitalize and that momentum was short-lived after a couple of penalties forced the Hawks to punt away.

“We were just shooting ourselves in the foot,” Snow said regarding the team’s miscues.

Meadowdale was able to put pressure on Hawks quarterback Hunter Rook throughout the night. Rook never got into a rhythm offensively and threw a season-high three interceptions.

The Hawks face the Sedro Woolley Cubs out of the Northwest Conference (2-2) next Friday at Sedro-Woolley High School (1235 Third St., Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284), 7:00 p.m.

Sedro-Woolley lost to Squalicum 49-41 on Friday night. The Cubs’ key players include running back Clayton Johnson, who has 10 rushing touchdowns through four games, and quarterback Joe Janicki, who had five total touchdowns against Squalicum.

Despite the loss against Meadowdale, the Hawks still feel confident about their chances this season.

“We’re going to come back hard [against] Sedro-Woolley,” Snow said.

Notes: Zack Karels missed last week’s game against Bishop Blanchet but was back in the lineup. Mitch Haldane added nine tackles and two assists. Jope Motokana had two sacks.

A week ago, the Hawks’ defense was struggling to keep the opposing offense out of the end zone. On a night where the offense was having trouble moving the ball early on, the defense held its ground. Each Blanchet offensive attack was met by a tough defensive stand by the Hawks.

Mountlake Terrace (2-1) used five turnovers, including three interceptions by sophomore Mason Stone, to pull away from Bishop Blanchet (1-2) in a non-conference battle. The Hawks’ secondary, despite the absence of Zack Karels, rebounded from last week’s game with a more inspiring performance.

Stone, whose three interceptions ties the school record for most interceptions in a single game, felt the past week of practice provided the team with an opportunity to polish up its schemes.

“We were pretty prepared for what Blanchet had to throw at us, and we just came in mentally prepared and physically as well,” Stone said.

Although Stone led the team statistically on defense, other contributors included Martinze Johnson with an interception of his own and Stafford Williams with two sacks.

Out of the five turnovers, none were nearly as important as Jordan Iese’s forced fumble and recovery to start the second half. With the Hawks hanging on to a 6-0 lead since Griffin Rash’s touchdown on the first drive of the game, Iese’s forced fumble gave the Hawks a chance to stretch the lead.

They did just that.

Freshman running back Devante Downs, filling in for the injured Karels, scored on a 26-yard touchdown run, and Hunter Rook followed up with the two-point conversion to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead. The score gave the Hawks some separation and breathing room.

When asked about what was going through his mind during the run, Downs said with a smile, “I hope I don’t get caught from behind.”

Shortly afterwards, Hunter Rook found Mitch Haldane for a 22-yard touchdown pass extending the lead to 21-0. Finally, Downs scored once again for his second touchdown of the night.

Next week’s matchup is a battle against traditional powerhouse Meadowdale (2-1) at Edmonds Stadium, 8:00 p.m. The Mavericks fell to district rival Edmonds-Woodway 10-7 late Friday night. The Hawks will not take this upcoming game lightly, as Meadowdale is a much different opponent than Bishop Blanchet.

“It’s a big game. We can’t get too cocky because that’s what happened against Oak Harbor. We just gotta keep our heads up and stay strong and get ready for war,” Stone said.

When the Mountlake Terrace football players took the field at Shoreline Stadium, they were full of energy and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case once time had run out on them.

Shorecrest (1-1) used a late run in the second half to pull away from the Hawks (1-1). After Ryan Benham’s touchdown from four yards out with 11:24 left in the game, the Hawks took a 23-19 lead, their first since the game’s opening drive. However, that would be the Hawks’ last scoring opportunity. Shorecrest responded with two consecutive touchdowns. An 11-yard touchdown run by Keegan Lockler and a 73-yard touchdown bomb to Damon Richards put the game out of reach.

“They smacked us in the mouth. There were plays that could have gone one way or the other. They made the key plays on defense and on offense,” Hawks coach Tony Umayam said.

The Scots’ offense was led by quarterback Ted Hammond with 288 yards passing and running back Keegan Smalls with 81 yards rushing. The Hawks’ young secondary was tested on multiple occasions and struggled to slow down Shorecrest’s balanced offense.

“I have faith that our secondary will get better as the season goes on,” Umayam said. “We’ll have to see the situation on Zack [Karels] though.”

Karels, who had played with a wrapped shoulder during last week’s victory over Oak Harbor, left the game with a shoulder injury late in the third quarter. He did not return to the field.

The game was closely contested throughout. Dual-threat quarterback Hunter Rook kept the Hawks within striking distance and led the offense with 131 yards passing and 144 yards rushing. He had a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Julian Snow just before the end of the first half and a rushing touchdown.

Last week, the Hawks had success dominating an outmatched Oak Harbor team. Shorecrest, a team that hung tough in their first game against Meadowdale, came out with more physical and more aggressive.

“They were physical and out hustled us. Those are hallmarks of our team… but we didn’t do that tonight,” Umayam said regarding his team’s effort.

The Hawks host the Bishop Blanchet Braves (1-1) next Friday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. The Braves are coming off of a 34-13 win over Granite Falls.

“It’s okay to let this one settle for a few days,” Umayam said. “This will motivate us to prepare better next time.”

Notes: LB Mitch Haldane had 19 total tackles. Mountlake Terrace was whistled for 10 penalties in the first half.
