Hello. I’m a senior, and I have my eighth semester coming up. My comrades and I in the Class of Ten feel strange right now. We’re listless, languished, lackadaisical, and languorous after three and a half years of Mountlake Terrace High School.
No doubt we have regrets and remorse. Maybe we should have done or not done this or that, but I’ll humbly say that we are the greatest graduating class in MTHS history, and we’re all going to be senators, CEOs, celebrities, and gods. No TPS reports for us!
But this transition is brutal. I long to return to my younger days spent in front of a television.
Did you ever watch “Rocket Power?” Otto, Twister, Reggie, and Squid tearing it up all over that town with the pier? And how their house was shaped like a boat? Awesome! Probably the only cartoon without a full set of parents… other than Buster’s dad from “Arthur.” Were they divorced, or was he just always flying planes? Interesting.
If you would like to see a dizzying, “Rocket Power-esque” array of athletic activities this spring, just go to a softball and baseball game, watch the golf team, or a girls tennis match. Or get your fix with just one track meet. The 110 meter hurdles are just as extreme as skateboarding, surfing, and vegemite.
The first game I ever played on my Xbox was “Jet Set Radio Future,” in which you control a teenage punk rollerblader graffiti artist in Tokyo in the future. You skate around, fighting the power and listening to DJ Professor K. It’s one of those games that you really can’t appreciate until you’re more secure and able to be impressed with its originality.
Other things that we are no longer too cool to do are puzzles and board games. Puzzle and Board Game Club meets some Thursdays in Room 205.
In 4th grade my late afternoons were occupied by “Dragonball Z” and “Zoids.” You might not recognize the latter, but it details the lives of teenagers with large, fighting animal-robots. However, I bet that many of you saw Goku and Frieza’s planet-smashing battle on Namek. Even though it took Goku about three episodes of yelling to power up to Super-Saiyan, it was worth the wait when his hair turned yellow and got even pointier.
Likewise, the Drama Department’s “Putnam County Spelling Bee” has been under construction for months, and will surely be worth the wait. Just as Goku had to be aware of that pink disc of death, you need to keep your head up the second week of March for the show.
Big ASB didn’t really do anything this month, so no staff members had an opportunity to help us out. But we know Mrs. Frost would have helped us if we asked, so she wins Most Hypothetically Helpful Staff Member to Big ASB for February.

Hi. I’m sitting at my dark gloomy computer on this dark gloomy day writing this column, and can’t help but feel that all the energy in the school has been sucked out by some boring, malevolent force.
There’s really nothing gravitating me towards Mountlake Terrace other than a desire to fix my broken grades that were neglected during Homecoming, football playoffs, and Macho Volleyball. If you’re encountering the same problems, try what I’ve found to be an excellent way to cope: complain.
It could be because the day is only about ten minutes long now. During summer it didn’t really get dark until eleven, and now it feels like bedtime at four thirty. This can do terrible things to one’s mood.
We’re also suffering from a relative chemical deficiency of Vitamin D, which our bodies absorb through exposure to sunlight. This affects disposition, and also causes rickets, which Forrest Gump had as a child. We have been collectively hit by rocks thrown by three bullies on bicycles.
If we’re not careful, we might not break out of this funk and win the Heisman Trophy, rescue Lieutenant Dan, play ping-pong, buy a shrimp boat, run, and finally marry Jenny like our friend did. Luckily, ASB has the answer! Just do as I say and everything will be awesome!
Football was fun. Though it ended abruptly, we got to witness the most successful season in Terrace history. It was great to see people going to games not only as some kind of social event, but to support a winning team playing important games. That feeling doesn’t have to end with getting manhandled by Central Kitsap.
Basketball is coming. It’s an even better environment, with no rain (actually the gym roof leaks so no guarantees), wind, or cold. The crowd also has a better opportunity to affect the game, sitting inches away from the court.
The first game is at home against Lynnwood on December 4. Come to the boys and girls games to watch the PPP races at halftime. Terrace students and basketball go together like peas and carrots.
November’s Most Helpful Staff Member to ASB is Mr. Sullivan. Not the awesome shop teacher from Brier Terrace, but the even awesomer choir director at Terrace. When Stew needed the National Anthem sung on short notice for the Veteran’s Day assembly, there was only one teacher willing and able to help.
His students consistently win competitions and awards all across the Northwest, and he has helped introduce hundreds of students to the History of Rock and Roll, and one of the two best instruments in the world, the guitar. He squished my sandwich last year and I wasn’t even mad.
Bye.

Hi. I’ll get around to telling you about ASB stuff, but I can make your life significantly more interesting with this paragraph right here. I would like to share a mind-blowing experience with each and every one of you. Some of us ASB folks noticed this a while back. What I would like everyone reading this column to do immediately after school is go to the HUB and lie down on your back on top of the stage with your head facing the windows to the baseball field. Orient yourself so that your head hangs over a stair –your perspective will be flipped upside down. Then imagine the ceiling to be the floor, and the floor to be the ceiling. Your eyes
will get used to perceiving things this way. It will be really trippy. Think about how hard it would be to climb over the wall into
Stew’s office, or why people’s feet are sticking to the ceiling. Keep at it for a few minutes, and the effect will only be amplified. I
couldn’t be more serious when I tell you to do this immediately. November isn’t nearly as busy as October. There are only a few things to talk about. The Mountlake Terrace Macho Volleyball tournament takes place on Nov. 10. Signups are over, but admission to watch is free with an ASB card. And for those of you who are competing, don’t forget to show up and get thrashed
by The Abusement Park. The top two teams will advance to the Edmonds School District tournament on Nov. 12. Hopefully those Meadowdale teams graduated and our school has a chance to win the whole thing. The canned food drive runs through all of November. Along with the altruistic notion of helping others who are less fortunate in our community, we have cut-throat, combative and more effective motivation. The Pursuit of the Power Plunger basketball games and races are scheduled for December, but the canned food drive is the best way to win and stick it those Lynnwood kids and their shiny new school. We lost PP last year because we only brought in about 11 cans per student. We can do better than that. Winning isn’t everything, but it means that we donated more of our time and resources to others than Lynnwood High School did. ASB will be more active this year in pulling your ears and nagging, so I look forward to better results in 2009. October’s Most Helpful Staff Member to Big ASB has been long overdue for accolades. His resources and knowledge have made our lives considerably easier while planning assemblies. His magic cords make projectors work in the gym, and his cameras capture images and sounds that need to be expressed every member of our school. Mr. Comeaux and HBN deserve a pat on the back, and even more really nice computers in their room.
Bye.

Hi. How are you? Wait, that’s a pretty loaded and thought-provoking question. Just read the rest of this article to find out about cool stuff at Mountlake Terrace.
A pleasant surprise this year has been the varsity football team. They aren’t bad at all; in fact they are quite good. While I’ve seen more fans at football games than in previous years, it could still be better. Even if you don’t like football, you can yell at the cheerleaders, buy candy, or just talk to people.
The last couple weeks of October are the biggest event of the school year: Homecoming. What is Homecoming? No one knows. But for a few days it becomes socially acceptable to wear costumes to school. It’s okay for 300 students to get together and yell about themselves. For a day, no one cares about anything but what color you’re wearing. A little weird, but a lot awesome.
Coronation is a process by which the school identifies who the coolest, nicest, best people are, gives them sashes, and slaps them metaphorical high-fives for a few days. It takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. It kicks off Homecoming Week(s).
The next few school days are when you do as the posters in the HUB say. ASB picks a few random dress-up spirit days leading up to Thursday’s class theme day and Friday’s class color day. The assembly and game take place on that Friday, Oct. 30. We’re playing Kamiak. If you can’t find a way to drum up some animosity towards our neighbors in Mukilteo, I have some ammunition for you: the average KHS student probably has a nicer car than you. If you’re too young to drive, then their cars are probably better than the ones you get rides in.
The dance is the next day, which happens to be Halloween. Spooooooooky!
Macho Volleyball is in November and therefore somewhat inapplicable to this column, but it takes time to get a team together and practice a little bit. It’s a male volleyball tournament, by the way. Talk to someone in Interhigh. Any teams formed will have the honor of competing for second place to The Abusement Park, an unstoppable bumping, setting, and spiking machine that I am a member of.
September’s Most Helpful Staff Member to Big ASB has dealt with many hardships incurred by the six of us. We borrowed his stapler, broke it, fixed it, and as far as I know, have yet to return it. While others may have reacted poorly and set fire to our office, he has handled it like a champ. Thanks, Mr. Brophy.
I feel like I can improve the health and happiness of the student body with just a few words here: Don’t be afraid of Neti Pots. They’re a non-medicinal cold treatment. Here’s how they work: You pour warm water through one nostril into your sinus cavity, let it exit through the other nostril, and then blow your nose. It’s amazing. Don’t be a wuss. Buy one right now.
Bye.
