Starting February 20, Community Transit will be cutting 20 percent of its bus service by adjusting all local routes and reducing frequency of buses. These service changes will likely impact all MTHS students who ride Community Transit. Here are some major route adjustments around MTHS:

Route 112: The bus route that directly serves MTHS will be changed significantly. First, weekday frequency will be reduced to every 30-60 minutes while Saturday service will be reduced to every hour. This route will now run between Mountlake Terrace Transit Center and Ash Way Park and Ride and will no longer serve 56th Avenue or areas around Roger’s Market Place, Edmonds Woodway High School, or Edmonds Community College. Service to those places will now be in the newly modified route 119. 112 will also no longer stop directly at Lynnwood Transit Center (LTC), but will stop two blocks east at the intersection of 44th Avenue & 200th Street. Route 112 will now continue as route 113 at Ash Way Park and Ride.

Route 113: This bus route will now be from Ash Way Park and Ride to Mukilteo and will have the same time frequency as route 112. Route 113 will no longer serve LTC or Alderwood Mall.

Route 119: This route has been extremely modified from currently serving LTC and Alderwood Mall to after February 20 running between Ash Way Park and Ride and Mountlake Terrace Transit Center. This route will continue to serve Meadowdale High School but will now also serve Edmonds Community College, Edmonds Woodway High School, 220th Street, and the area around Roger’s Market Place which will no longer be served by route 112.

Route 120: This bus route will still run from LTC to Canyon Park, however it will no longer serve Alderwood Middle School, the stores around Barnes & Noble, or the Alderwood Boys & Girls Club. It will now come every hour except during peak hours on both weekdays and Saturdays.

Route 130: This bus will now run from LTC to Edmonds Station and will continue to serve the Mountlake Terrace City Center, Mountlake Terrace Transit Center, and Aurora Village Transit Center. It is replacing the segment of route 131 between Aurora Village and Edmonds Station since route 131 is being completely eliminated. Route 130 will come every 30-60 minutes on weekdays and every hour on Saturdays.

Route 196: New route between Edmonds Station and Alderwood Mall. This bus will replace the service that is currently provided by routes 113 and 118 on 196th Street and Alderwood Mall Parkway. It will not stop at LTC.

How to get somewhere on the bus starting at MTHS beginning February 20th:

Alderwood Mall:

Take the northbound 112 to the intersection of 44th Avenue & 200th Street in Lynnwood and walk east to the stop for the newly modified route 115/116 and 201/202. Routes 115/116 will drop you off on the west side of the mall near JCPenney and routes 201/202 will drop you off on the east side near Sears and Target.

OR: Get off the northbound 112 at 44th Avenue and 196th Street and walk east to the stop for route 196 to Alderwood Mall. Route 196 serves the stores around Barnes & Noble as well as the east side of the mall near Sears and Target.

Edmonds Community College:

Edmonds Community College will now only be directly served by routes 115/116. From MTHS, take the northbound 112 to the intersection of 44th Avenue and 200th Street and walk west to the stop for the westbound 115/116.

OR: Take the northbound route 112 to the intersection of 44th Avenue and 196th Street and walk west to the stop for the westbound route 196. Get off the bus at 196th Street and 68th Avenue and walk south four blocks.

For most people, the holidays are a time filled with happy festivities, traditions, home cooked feasts and the giving and receiving of gifts. Many low-income families may not be able to afford the costs of the holidays. That is why the freshman ASB started the Giving Tree.

The Giving Tree was set up in the front window of the main entrance. Leaves with gift requests from students and families of MTHS who are having hard times covered the window. There were over 200 leaves to start on that tree, numbering about 30-40 families. Everyone in the family got their own leaf including the parents.

“The Giving Tree is benefitting families in our community, where at least one of the kids goes to Mountlake Terrace or Brier Terrace and then we’re trying to help the whole family, so that’s why you’ll probably see things in there for parents, for little kids, everybody. We want to make sure the whole family has something for the holidays, for winter,” MTHS family advocate Ashley Johnson said.

There were over 100 gifts donated. There were also cash donations so gifts that had not been donated could be purchased and then given to families in need. The support from Mountlake Terrace was huge.

“Some of [the gift requests] are things that people want like games or a basketball, and there are other ones that people actually need like jackets and hats and scarves that they can’t afford,” freshman ASB representative Ali Hitchcock said.

The Giving Tree started because a lot of families weren’t able to get things from Salvation Army or Saint Vincent De Paul, organizations set up to help those in need, so the freshman ASB decided to help out those families as well as others who simply couldn’t afford to buy presents of their own.

Presents were collected until Dec. 14, wrapped on Dec. 15 and given to families on Dec. 16. Everything was done confidentially. “We want it to be anonymous,” Johnson said. “[We want] people [to] feel comfortable asking for help.”

The Giving Tree may become a MTHS tradition for the years to come, “I think the giving tree was a really good idea and that it should be a tradition because it really helps people out,” Hitchcock said. In a time that is so joyful for many, it is great to see the community coming together to help those who need it.

“I have been so impressed by how caring Mountlake Terrace [is]. So many people want to help and I think that is huge because sometimes we forget that the person sitting next to [us] may be in need…it’s been really awesome to see how much Terrace really cares about people.” Johnson said.

During a Multicultural Week lunchtime performance on Jan. 10, the club Colores Unidos performed a series of Mexican and Latino dances including Cumbia, Banda, Bachacha and Macarena.

However, in the middle of second lunch at 11:41 a.m., freshman Joshua Wyant ran through the group of dancers shirtless. Alex Corona, a Colores Unidos member commented on the display and said it was disrespectful to the group.

Student behavior coordinator Anthony Williams, who also witnessed the spectacle, commented that it was obnoxious. “Those girls needed a lot of courage to do what they did,” Williams stated. “And [Joshua] needed a lot of courage to do what he did.”

After Wyant ran through the group, other students began to dance in more respectful manners with the performers, making things more interesting and fun for everybody. Even assistant principal Scott Morrison joined in and busted a few moves.

Wyant will not be given disciplinary action for his misconduct.

About 10-15 MTHS students came to school late to protest administration’s recent practice of scanning the ID cards of students who are late to school at the front door. They were planning to cause a jam of student traffic at the door, but when they arrived, not a single student was carded.

The protest was started organized through an event on Facebook called “Come To School Late” which had over 130 MTHS students saying they planned on attending or might attend.

“I’m really disappointed because I had about 100 people [say they were attending] and only about 10 people showed up,” senior Jordan McKinney said. McKinney created the event on Facebook.

When the students who were participating showed up and entered the front door, they were greeted with high-fives from ASB representatives and holiday music blasting on a stereo.

“It looks like administration knew, so someone blabbed,” McKinney said.

When assistant principal Peter Schurke was asked if he knew ahead of time about the protest, he replied: “No.”

“We don’t necessarily scan every day and this morning we decided that we weren’t going to scan; we were going to trust students to be on time,” Schurke said.

Administrators have been scanning the barcode on the ID card of late students for the past month in an effort to reduce the amount of students coming into school after 7:20 a.m.

“We were standing here watching incredibly huge numbers of students walking through the door after the tardy bell had rung,” Schurke said. “The numbers of students coming in the building [late] were just so huge that we decided we had to do something.”

Mixed reactions toward administration’s attempt to reduce student tardiness

“This is simply to promote awareness that we want students to be in class.”

Eliminating the morning tutorial time at the beginning of the year has led to most students arriving within the same 20 minute period, thus increasing traffic.

“We’ve been working with the city planner to try and work on the traffic patterns,” Schurke also stated. “[Also to] improve the traffic flow into the school.”

Whether they showed up or not, about 10 percent of the student population joined the event on Facebook which implies that administrators still have some convincing to do.

“I wanted to start to bring awareness about all these ridiculous rules that have been started this year,” McKinney said.

A little over a year ago, then-junior, Hunter Goncalves was the girl’s swim captain competing for a state swim title. Now, instead of swimming, the 17-year-old Goncalves is actively involved in the Occupy Seattle protests.

She grew up in a politically active family and has participated in protests in the past-although not on the same scale as the Occupy movement. Her parents were generally supportive of her joining the protests.

“They just told me ‘don’t get arrested’,” Goncalves said.

She loves history but “wasn’t really inspired by anything” she was learning in school.

“Typical civil rights activists don’t really interest me other than that they are fighting for something they believe in,” Goncalves said.

The Incident

On Tuesday Nov. 15, Goncalves was arrested for allegedly attempting to swing a stick at a police officer. Multiple reports from various media outlets say that the 17-year-old teenage protester did not hit the officer but was grabbed by another officer on a bicycle.

The story doesn’t end there.

According to Goncalves, “I was arrested for literally stepping over the yellow line in the road. I was assaulted by one member of our altruistic [Seattle Police Department], who grabbed a black flag I was waving, pulled me across his bicycle, and dragged me around. Several comrades grabbed me in an attempt to pull me from the SPD’s grip, but the SPD whipped out pepper spray and sprayed them all.”

These were not the only people who were pepper-sprayed by the police. Later that day, an 84-year-old woman and a pregnant woman were both pepper-sprayed by Seattle police officers at the Occupy protests. Those incidents were widely reported on local and national media.

Goncalves was not held on bail because she is still a minor, but she said that several of her friends were arrested and held on bail. Goncalves’ parents had mixed reactions following the incident.

“[To] my dad, it just felt humorous for some reason. My mom was initially very angry but she calmed down after talking to people that were around me,” she said.

Personal Motivation

Goncalves has a multitude of reasons why she decided to forgo her senior year of swimming and to participate in the Occupy Seattle movement, which is growing day by day.

“America is corrupt, there’s no arguing that, and the list of reasons I have for protesting are almost infinite. The divide between the ultra rich and the people who can’t afford food is widening at a disgustingly uprising rate,” Goncalves said. “The middle class is almost nonexistent, yet there is still the dumb puritanical belief that America is a place where opportunity is abundant and where if you work hard enough, you can succeed, which is simply not true anymore and has been proven as not true by years and years of social and economical research, which people with privilege and legislative abilities, the people in power, simply ignore, and screw the rest of us over.”

She said she cannot stand the lack of progress in America. She does not understand why our elected “leaders” are motivated by myriad amounts of money, instead of serving the people.

“There still is a social stigma even within populations of people in poverty that poverty is a result of being lazy, which leads to a culture where we ignore it for the most part and feel slightly guilty about but for the most part just kind of wish it goes away,” Goncalves said.

This is just one of many reasons Goncalves brought up in an interview on Monday. She also said she feels strongly against the ideas of capitalism and monopolies. The economy, she said, has been “disassociated from reality.”

Protesting in Seattle

During her phone interview with the Hawkeye on Monday evening, she sat out on the rooftop of a house on 23rd Avenue and Alder Street, which happens to be directly across from Garfield H.S. in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The group has also occupied a building on 10th Avenue and Union Street.

She makes the trip down to Seattle whenever she can to join her fellow “comrades”.

“We have moved into neighborhoods and [our] mentality [is to] utilize graffiti and resistance and property destruction to our ends,” she said, although she realizes that many people may not be fond of those actions.

She plans on joining port laborers, who cannot unionize, in the West Coast Port Strike on Dec. 12 as well, and encourages anyone to come.

“Occupy is a mindset, so start living by it. Refuse norms, work against capitalism, and fight oppression in every form. Everyone has an undeniable right to live without having to subject themselves to an absurd amount of struggle,” Goncalves said. “Build networks, find people who share your ideas, talk with each other and begin organizing. Change is inevitable, be a part of it!”

Current status

Goncalves has been heavily involved with Occupy Seattle events since November.

Yesterday, in fact, she decided to drop all three of her classes at MTHS and transfer all credits to Seattle Central Community College, which ironically is a controversial public area currently occupied by protestors.

Seattle Central Community College has been trying to evict about 100 campers for several months now, as sanitation and security issues have cost the college about $20,000 a week.

Goncalves will continue to protest against what she feels are unacceptable social norms.

“From a more philosophical stance, we are born, live and then die. In that time period, we suffer enormous hardships, have to deal with failing social expectations, and are told we have to work our backs off to be happy. We are never completely happy and we are never completely free; we are always constrained by people telling us to do this and to do that, we never completely own anything, our profits are never ours, no matter how much you try to convince yourself. Otherwise you are always striving to fulfill some unfillable ideal of how to live; you are always striving towards someone else’s insatiable and unattainable goal,” Goncalves said. “I don’t want to live like that. I want to be myself, I want to be free from this bullshit. So, is that really what we’re supposed to do with our lives? Life is precious, I don’t believe in an afterlife and I don’t believe in doing things you’re not totally enthusiastic about. What a depressing species we have become.”

As of now, Goncalves won’t back down from what she has said.

There isn’t a clear solution or an end in sight.

She will continue to fight by protesting, even if there are others who may not share her same viewpoint.

App of the Year

In this year’s iTunes Rewind, the application Instagram took home the award of “iPhone App of the Year.” Instagram is extremely popular and has about 15 million users. The photo sharing app lets you take pictures, add effects to them and share them on social networks. The five-star rated app is extremely innovative in the way that users share pictures and see their friends’ pictures. The runners-up for the category are VidRythm and Band of the Day. The game Tiny Tower took the award for “iPhone Game of the Year.” Maybe not surprisingly, the popular game Angry Birds was the top selling app of the year.

Official End of the War in Iraq

After nearly eight years of combat, the war in Iraq is officially over. The war ended on Dec. 15 and U.S. troops will be pulled out by Dec. 31. The war was both deadly and extremely expensive with nearly 4500 troops who lost their lives defending our country and the total cost of the war was estimated at about $800 billion. There are many concerns for the future, both in Iraq and for the troops coming home. There are still questions whether the Iraqi forces will be able to protect their country without U.S. assistance. With the economy so bad and unemployment so high, many U.S. soldiers may face unemployment as they return to the states.

Lost Drone

A surveillance drone from the C.I.A. crashed in Iran about two weeks ago and is raising many questions about what actually happened. The drone was reportedly a stealth RQ-170. The downed drone was shown on Iranian state television. U.S. officials said the drone malfunctioned which caused it to crash in Iran. However, there are reports that the drone was possibly hacked by the Iranians. President Obama has asked for the drone to be returned to the U.S. but it doesn’t look like Iran will be giving it back.

White House Shooting

Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez is the man charged with trying to assassinate President Barack Obama with an AK-47 assault rifle at the White House on Nov. 11. Police arrested Ortega on Nov. 15 in Pennsylvania. If convicted, he could receive life in prison. Ortega said President Obama “needed to be taken care of,” according to FBI special agent Chris Ormerod. Court documents showed that Ortega called Obama “the devil” and the “anti-Christ.” However, President Obama and the First Lady were in no harm when the shooting occurred. Both were out of the White House.

Gingrich soars

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is one of the front-runners in the Republican presidential primary. According to a recent USA Today Gallup Poll of likely voters, Gingrich has 23 percent and Mitt Romney is close behind Gingrich with 21 percent. However, problems are already showing for Gingrich. He reportedly made $1.6 to $1.8 million from mortgage company Freddie Mac, a government-controlled company he heavily criticized Democrats for supporting. He made comments during the CNN national security debate on Nov. 23 that suggested a more moderate stance on some illegal immigrants, sparking criticism from the other Republican presidential candidates.

Pepper spraying at UC-Davis

The University of California-Davis is under fire for how university police controlled protesters on its campus. On Nov. 18, police pepper sprayed student protesters in the face at point-blank range. According to university officials, nine protesters were pepper sprayed and two protesters had to be hospitalized. The protesters were pepper sprayed because they refused to disperse after police told them. Two officers have been placed under administrative leave. The UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi called the video “chilling” and said, “I feel horrible for what happened Friday,” referring to the pepper spraying incident. Protesters and the school’s faculty association are calling for her resignation.

A brisk Monday afternoon after Thanksgiving break didn’t stop teachers from waving signs on the intersection of 196th and 44th advocating against additional cuts to the Washington state education budget.

The Washington state legislature began a 30-day special session on Nov. 28 to address the state’s budget shortfalls. The special session has students, teachers and parents fearing additional cuts to the already limited education budget. Teachers and educators in the Edmonds School District took part in a statewide Day of Action to let lawmakers know their sentiments.

“We’re trying to get the message out to the community that our kids and schools have taken too many cuts already and it’s time that they do something about that and stand up for schools,” Edmonds Education Association president Andi Nofziger-Meadows said.

The Day of Action was organized by the Washington Education Association and was made up of various events around the state geared towards getting the attention of lawmakers and garnering the support of local communities. Many teachers went directly to the capitol building to voice their opinions.

From 2:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., teachers from MTHS, Cedar Way Elementary and Brier Terrace M.S. gathered to wave signs with messages against education cuts. Teachers from other schools met at different locations to wave signs on busy intersections as well.

“We’re down to the dregs and we were already down to the dregs before the cuts even began, to tell you the truth,” counselor Julie Petterson said.

Despite being ranked among the worst in per-pupil spending, Washington state has still been able to rank in the top 10 in SAT scores among the 50 states. Some teachers believe making cuts to the education budget could be detrimental.

“Think about the challenges of AP classes. You cut three days out of an AP class, there are three days of learning students aren’t getting to get ready for a national test,” history teacher Dory Weber said.

“I think we do a really great job considering we’re one of the lowest funded states in the nation for education,” Nofziger-Meadows said. “We have great teachers who are committed to doing their jobs and doing the best they can with fewer resources but in the grand scheme of things, we could be doing a lot better.”

Legislators have considered various cuts to make such as eliminating school bus transportation, increasing class sizes, reducing the length of the school year and eliminating certain programs and bonuses. These ideas don’t sit well with teachers, though.

“It’s not good for students. It’s not good for student success,” Weber said. “More and more families need help from schools but we can’t give them the help they need if we cut services like transportation and food programs.”

There are differing views on how to solve the budgeting problem and it will not be an easy feat. Petterson does not think cuts should be made and “would develop a viable revenue stream. No cuts. We need something that is sustainable and progressive.”

Washington state governor Christine Gregoire has proposed $1.8 billion in government cuts as well as a half-cent sales tax increase. There are mixed opinions about her proposal and it is uncertain whether or not it will pass. However, teachers hope there will be a favorable outcome.

“Our kids don’t get a second chance for an education so they need to make the most of it while they’re in school,” Nofziger-Meadows said.

Although teachers have been out fighting for their students, some students have already taken action. Hundreds of students from Garfield, West Seattle and Nathan Hale high schools walked out on Nov. 30 and marched to Seattle city hall to oppose education cuts. They hoped to attract the attention of local officials.

Although there have been some comparisons of the Day of Action to the recent Occupy Seattle movement, they are two different and separate things.

“We’re not protesting, we just don’t want cuts to education,” Weber said.

Legislators have a tough task ahead of them for the next few weeks but the teachers will continue to ride the momentum they created last week. Don’t expect them to go away quietly.

Voters in Washington handily approved Initiative 1183 on Nov. 8, which would close state liquor stores and allow large grocery stores to sell hard alcohol instead. The big switch to private liquor sales comes June 1 of next year.

I-1183 passed with almost 59 percent of voters voting “yes.” The initiative passed in 34 of Washington’s 39 counties and garnered a large amount of support from both the liberal Puget Sound area and more conservative Eastern Washington.

I-1183 was by far the closest watched and most expensive campaign in Washington state on the 2011 ballot. Ads and commercials for both sides blanketed the airways and littered local streets.

The biggest spender of the campaign was Issaquah-based Costco Wholesale which spent over $22 million to persuade voters to kick the state out of the liquor business.

“We’re advocates for the consumer; we think the consumer expects that Costco is going to stand up for them,” Costco CEO Jim Sinegal said in an interview to King 5 News.

The initiative’s passing will likely have little effect on the price of liquor, since Washington will keep its high liquor taxes.

The campaign against the initiative was largely funded by out-of-state wine and liquor distributors who feared that deregulation of the industry would spread to other states. It also focused on the safety issues of privatizing liquor and especially the risk of stores selling liquor to minors.

A “No on I-1183” ad said, “Police stings prove that gas stations and minimarts sell alcohol to one in four minors.” However, 1183 will only allow stores measuring at least 10,000 square feet to sell liquor. Most mini-marts are well below that size.

The passing of I-1183 is expected to add an additional $80 million in revenue for the state in the next six years. That is welcoming news since the legislature is currently discussing how to close a $2 billion budget shortfall.

The big switch also means that 900 state employees, most of whom work at state-run liquor stores, will lose their jobs in June.

In the coming months, the state will begin to wind down its liquor business, including selling off inventory and the distribution center in Seattle and also auctioning off state-run liquor stores.

The administration feels that getting to school on time is important and has a huge impact on learning in the classroom.

A few weeks ago, administrators began scanning the barcodes on the ID cards of students who were tardy to school. Their names were also marked down as a way to motivate the students to get to class on time.

The statistics gathered from the past two weeks have uncovered poor attendance. On the third day of this new system, Nov. 21, 152 people were walking in the door at 7:20 a.m.

“We have contacted the city planner to extend the light on 44th [in front of school] so that those who are trying to get in to the school can do so,” Assistant Principal Peter Schurke said.

Staff members are trying to figure out a way to get more students in the classroom on time. So far, the system has steadily helped the number of students tardy to school decrease.

Students have an unfavorable opinion though.

“It is totally unreasonable that they would scan my card even though I was only two seconds late,” junior Samantha Mafune said.

Senior Shawn Semana said, “I walked outside to grab something from my car and then I had to wait in line to be carded, even though I had already been inside.”

If you are even a second or two late at exactly 7:20 a.m., you will receive a detention from Schurke or another administrator. If you don’t have your ID, you can look to your left and there will be someone from the administration waiting to write down your name.
