Cassie Soriano has many talents including drawing, taking photographs, and sewing costumes for the Anime conventions that she regularly attends. Soriano’s many talents were the inevitable product of her love of drawing. She has been drawing since the age of five, with shows like Digimon and Tenshi Muyo for inspiration.

Soriano has won many awards at newspaper conventions for her editorial cartooning including an excellence award that she won in this years state convention. Soriano’s love for Digimon and Tenshi Muyo drove her to her first anime convention in California with her cousins; at this Convention, she found the world of cosplay. It wasn’t until her freshman year that Soriano found Washington’s own Anime convention, Sakura-Con. Soriano decided to dress as a beloved character, she made that first costume with first time sewing skills.

Like sewing, she taught herself photography with out taking any classes. In her junior year, Soriano became Hawkeye’s photographics editor and continued through her senior year editing all of the photos which appear in the Hawkeye. Soriano has been part the F.C.C.L.A club since her sophomore year, during her senior year Soriano became the clubs Vice president.

Soriano also designed the F.C.C.L.A and honor society t-shirts. Soriano will be attending The Seattle Art Institute this fall and plans to become a costume designer, working for theatre troops at first and then eventually opening her own cosplay shop.

Few freshmen have the courage to make themselves known. Jesse Anderson, however, has been iconic and inspirational since the start of high school. Most people will remember him as the guy that played trombone with his foot at the Arts Assembly.

Being the incredible trombone player that he is, he will be attending Central Washington University next year to study classical and jazz music as well as psychology. As an incoming freshman Anderson strived to be a part of the nationally renowned Jazz 1. His dream of being in the group came true his sophomore year when he became the only sophomore first chair trombonist in Jazz 1 history. Not only is his musicianship outstanding but also his charm and charisma inspire all who encounter him – so much so that he was selected as the most inspirational Jazz 1 member for three consecutive years. On top of his ample talent and achievements he was invited to play in the all-star chamber group at the UW.

Of course, just like any other freshman, Jesse made mistakes in his first year. He feels that he “spent a lot of time in [his] first year, venturing down wrong paths, and [he] learned quickly from these decisions what is right from what is wrong.”

However the power of jazz helped guide his soul and illuminated his true calling. He is off with a level head and driven heart to achieve his dreams and continue his passion.

Jack Carrick is known by many to be creative, artistic, and have a critical eye on shapes and buildings. He has loved to draw since he was young, before the age of 13 he had four art pieces in the Edmonds Arts Festival. At the age of 7 he began to draw cityscapes, which began his interest for architecture. As Carrick grew older his architectural hobby grew as he discovered his heroes Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Geary. Carrick’s inspired by Wright’s use of structure and concrete along with Geary’s funky and unconventional designs.

In Carrick’s junior year he took Drafting I and II, which introduced him to the AutoCAD software. This will prove to be extremely beneficial to Carrick, as most architecture firms today use the software to draft and design buildings. During his senior year Carrick started the Architectural Drafting class through intra-district tech prep at Edmonds Woodway, Carrick skipped the two beginning levels and moved ahead to level three and four because of his prior experience in his junior year. earlier this year Carrick won a thousand dollar scholarship for vocational studies of architecture.

For Carrick’s senior project he designed a house for the Lynnwood Rotary Club and entered his design in a contest. Carrick’s design is currently tied for first; if he were to win his design would be used for the Rotary Club’s new building.

After graduation Carrick plans to attend Lake Washington Technical College for a year and a half to earn his associates degree in architecture then he plans to transfer to the University of Washington to earn his masters degree in architecture.

Unknown to many, Mackenzie Flood is an incredible dancer. She began dancing at the age of 4, and has been dancing ever since. Attending Barclay Shelton Dance Centre since 10th grade, she “is loving every minute of it”. Flood participates in many types of dancing, including ballet, hip-hop, jazz and lyrical. Her favorite is hip-hop, because “it’s the most upbeat and the most fun to perform for sure. I really like choreographing it too.”

Flood recognizes Brenna Donohue, her hip-hop teacher and senior project mentor, as having a hue influence on her dancing, “She really helped me grow as a dancer and choreographer. It’s really easy for me to relate to her and I really respect her as a person. I love taking her class, it’s so much fun.”

Normally a quiet person, Flood said that dance is a way to “express [her] self in a different way.” She loves performing her dances, saying “there’s nothing better than getting up on that stage and performing in front of a bunch of people.” Although she didn’t make it on the pom squad for college, Flood said that her “plan is to work hard and try again next year.” Dance, to her, is an extremely important part of life. “I may not be very experienced, or all that good at it, but it will always be a passion of mine.”

Aside from dancing, Flood has many more accomplishments. She has been the ASB Secretary for four years in a row, as well as taking multiple AP classes. Her GPA is 3.83, and she has been accepted to the University of Washington. She has worked in an after school program at Lynnwood Elementary for the past three years.

Most graduating seniors view going to live on campus at college an extremely difficult transition. To Ben Winters and Brittany Buxton, that is novice. They have been living entirely on their own for the majority of their senior year.

Aside from some child support funds and parental contributions they are successfully and stably living in an apartment in Bothell together. After domestic issues which resulted in no contact orders against their fathers the two decided to try to survive in the real world together rather than have to foot two separate rents and living expenses.

They pay for their cost of living through steady jobs as well as selling eggs from Winter’s mother’s chickens at a farmers market in Seattle. On top of their employment and self sustained living they balance school and extracurricular activities. Winters has been on varsity soccer since his freshman year and has served as goalie and a captain all throughout high school. Buxton has been a member of the hip hop team since her sophomore year at Terrace.

With all of their other responsibilities they have both found time to get a jump start in college through running start. Buxton has also done dental career work through Sno-Isle. Next year they will attend Eastern Washington University. Winters wants to pursue a career as a nurse and Buxton aspires to become a dental hygienist.

After an uneasy and unexpected shove into the real world they now feel quite comfortable and adapted to living on their own. When they manage to find free time they enjoy playing Mario Kart and going to movies as well as relaxing with yoga and Pilates.

While other students are nervously awaiting their fully parent funded dorm orientation Buxton and Winters are happily bustling about their apartment, years ahead of almost every student in maturity, wisdom, and responsibility.

A trip to the movie theater, for most, is simply a escape from the mundane routine of their everyday lives; a chance to tune out and immerse yourself in thoughtless action and an ecstasy of lights, color, and sound. Breaking the trend of drool-faced teen movie watchers is 18-year-old Colby Larson.

Larson says he “enjoys going to a movie theater and walking out with a new lesson or moral.” Unlike most teens Larson strives to draw inspiration from the movies he watches; all in hopes of setting his films apart in a new unique way.

Larson set out to make his own mark in the ever-growing movie business. Equipped with his Canon HV40 HD camera he drew the theme of the subconscious mind and its ability to tell your future from the film “Donnie Darko” and TV series “Kyle XY.” Then combined his eye for cinematography to create (for his senior project) the short film “Dreaming with Zoey.”

“Dreaming with Zoey” runs about 20 minutes long and stars Mountlake Terrace’s own Gabriel Much and Maddie Flood. The film is about a young man whose girlfriend goes missing and through his dreams he picks up clues to find her location. The film can be viewed on Vimeo.com/colbylarson, just click on “Dreaming with Zoey.” Larson enjoys editing and revising the movie in his free time, so be on the lookout for a revised version sometime this summer.

Larson’s future plans include attending the film program at Seattle Central Community College next year. This summer he plans on combing his hobbies to produce some dirt bike and long board videos as well as doing freelance wedding gigs. Larson’s passion for the filmmaking business combined with raw talent set him apart from the everyday crowd. We should all be on the look out for his movies hitting the big screen.

Three words sum up Navarre Kerr: Where to begin? With his plethora of extracurricular activities, it is hard to imagine how he can still find time for all of his schoolwork. Yet amidst his extreme involvement and advanced classes he is 13th in his graduating class with a cumulative GPA of 3.93.

Throughout his high school career, Kerr has excelled in many aspects of his passion for media and communications. Sophomore year, he served on the yearbook staff as well as Hawkeye staff. Continuing on in Hawkeye, he contributed greatly to the paper as well achieved the position of photography manager his senior year. He was later selected as one of the Hawkeye MVPs. To further his media involvement, Kerr was a part of the leadership staff on Hawk TV.

Outside of his digital and media aspects, he served as a class representative his junior year and was elected senior class president.

Along with ASB and media work, Kerr has been a link crew leader for two years as well as a member of National Honor Society since induction second semester of his sophomore year. In December of this year, he was also selected as student-of-the-month.

When he finds free time amongst his endless responsibilities, he enjoys playing guitar. In fact, his passion is so strong for it that he taught guitar to seven students for his senior project. Aside from real guitar he is ranked in the top 500 people in the world at the Guitar Hero video game series and has designed his own video games.

Next year, Kerr will be attending the University of Washington Bothell to get a bachelor’s degree in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences: Media and Communications. After UW, he plans to go to Washington State University to master in broadcasting. His dream job is to be a radio/television host or the narrator of commercials. To ease the financial burden of college, he was granted a $4,000 Chancellor’s scholarship from UW Bothell as well as the $1,000 McLaughlin Memorial scholarship through the Hawkeye. Look and listen for him in the future, because he is headed non-stop to pursue his dreams.

The status of high school valedictorian is a pedestal few students ever achieve. Coupled with rigorous courses, numerous extra-curricular activities, and sports year round it is nearly unattainable. Teryn Bouche is among those elite few who have achieved the almost unfeasible.

The status of high school valedictorian is a pedestal few students ever achieve. Coupled with rigorous courses, numerous extra-curricular activities, and sports year round it is nearly unattainable. Teryn Bouche is among those elite few who have achieved the almost unfeasible.

Bouche has been around the clubs, sports, activities and back again during her high school years. Sports wise she started her freshman year with year round sports. To top it off she made varsity tennis and varsity basketball along with JV soccer in 9th grade, a very rare and esteemed achievement.

She continued on varsity tennis through all four years and played on varsity soccer her junior year. After taking a break from basketball her sophomore year she came back to varsity for her junior and senior year. Finally, to further expand her wide variety of sports experience she was on the swim team her senior year.

To no surprise her perfect GPA got her inducted into the national honor society her sophomore year. In the club aspect she has been on TATU since her sophomore year and served as the club captain her senior year.

During her junior year she helped benefit the community and world through key club and senior year she helped better the school as the ASB historian. She also helped smoothly transition incoming freshman into high school as a link crew leader her junior and senior year.

Along with her ample amount of activities she has taken half of the AP courses the school offers including European history, English 11, English 12, biology, and statistics. Outside of school she has played piano for over six years.

Next year she will be attending the University of San Diego. She is undecided about what she wants to major in but is gearing towards math or science since they were her best subjects in school. With a resume like Bouche’s the sky is the limit for whatever she pursues.

Two years ago, residents of Mountlake Terrace were given a survey on what they would like to see in their community; their No. 1 request was for a local farmers market. After two long and arduous years, their wish was finally granted.

Buzzing with excitement and anticipation, fellow Mountlake Terrace residents awaited the official ribbon cutting ceremony on May 6 that would open the new Mountlake Terrace Farmers Market, located on 232nd and 58th. It will be open every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. through the end of September.

Mountlake Terrace’s Business Association President and Chair of Farmers Market Steering Committee Don Andrews gave the opening speech in which he thanked the mayor, the city council, the key citizens that were part of bringing the market to fruition, and the business contributors.

After a few more people involved in the project gave a speech, the ribbon cutting commenced. The market was open for good.

Vic Sood, a member of the city’s Planning Commission and Vice Chair of the Farmers Market Steering Committee of the Mountlake Terrace Business Association, helped find the site for the farmers market, along with two other members of the Steering Committee. Sood is the father of MTHS teacher and men’s basketball coach Nalin Sood.

Grant Davidson, Market Manager, is responsible for getting the vendors together. He has had 17 years of experience as a Market Manager, and he currently works at three other farmers markets – Lake Forest Park, Woodinville, and Crossroads in Bellevue – as the market manager.

“We make our money here, and we want to give back to the community,” Andrews said about the rationale for the market. “We also hope to bring some traffic from outside the city to spend money inside the city.”

As of now, there are about 12 vendors, but Andrews estimates that there will be around 25 on average, adding more as time goes on.

The market is going to have “the spirit of just a farmers market,” Andrews said; everything sold must be grown in Washington or made by the vendor. He also explained that all the ingredients must come from Washington as well. Two craft booths will be added during July and September. The dates are to be announced.

One of the vendors is Tiny’s Organics, a certified organic farm located in Wenatchee. Tiny’s has been around for 20 years and is involved in 33 farmers markets throughout the Puget Sound. They make their own jam, dried fruits, and specialize in stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, cherries, etc.). Tiny’s Organics is only available through farmers markets, and/or online at www.tinysorganic.com.

Yeng Garden is one of the many flower vendors, and has been involved in farmers markets for 10 years. The enormous array of flowers for sale are grown in fields in Snohomish. Another flower vendor is C.N.L Garden; it also sells fresh produce.

There are also vendors such as Paulie’s Plants and Veggies, which sells plants and herbs. The owner, Paula, has been selling at farmers markets for about four years, and is involved in the Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, and Lake Forest Park farmers markets. Her crops are not mass produced, and no pesticides are used.

“I realized my product is appreciated in city life,” Paula said.

Other vendors include Four Seasons Gourmet Food, Happy Cakes, Sweet As Can BEE Honey Farm, Classic Kettle Corn, and Full Circle Farm, among others.

Vendors and market organizers expect the market to be popular, prosperous, and a way for the community to come together.

Student volunteers are needed: contact Vic Sood at manu_vic@yahoo.com for more information.
